A public signage system designed for waste and recycling collection points across Sumida City. The design reorganizes complex disposal information through large-scale typography, clear color coding, multilingual support, and QR access to detailed rules. Collection days are displayed as bold visual elements, allowing residents to recognize schedules from a distance, while waste categories are grouped by color: warm red tones for burnable and non-burnable waste, and green tones for recyclables and plastics.
The system has been deployed at more than 9,000 collection points, maintaining a consistent visual identity throughout the city while adapting to local collection patterns. Flexible sticker-based updates also allow the signage to respond to new collection points and area-specific disposal conditions. Developed through collaboration between Sumida City and Chiba University, the project transforms often-overlooked waste collection sites into clear, recognizable information points within the everyday streetscape.
